Big Box

Prudence forbids me to offer context for this little rant, but I have to say it. The traditional model of a university library is NOT a “big box where books can be retrieved.” It’s a playground of erudition where browsing brings sweet pleasures and pains and serendipity can change a life.

  1. And yet, for many of my generation, it is only when one uses the library as the former that one truly discovers the latter. It is certainly never implied through K-12 education; in college, it is the rare professor indeed who speaks of the library in a way that even suggests the practicality of browsing let alone the delight of it.
